Bhubaneswar: A team from the World Bank, led by Senior Economist Thomas Danielewitz, held a detailed review meeting with officials from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) in Odisha on Friday. The focus of this meeting was to enhance the statistical data framework of the state, as part of the World Bank-supported Odisha State Capability and Resilient Growth Programme. The discussions included key strategies for improving the state's statistical systems, engaging with Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg.
One of the main topics was the implementation of Generic Statistics Business Process Modelling within the state's operations. This initiative aims to optimize data collection, analysis, and application processes, ensuring compliance with internationally recognized standards while integrating advanced methodologies and technologies. Furthermore, the World Bank team suggested organizing exposure visits for DES officials to observe best practices in statistical ecosystems from leading states and countries, thereby equipping them with the necessary skills to foster innovation in Odisha's governance.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the proposal for the Odisha Integrated Statistical System (OISS), a comprehensive framework intended to enhance data collection and guarantee timely access to accurate information for decision-makers across various sectors. The OISS is envisioned as a cornerstone for data-driven policymaking, ensuring that government decisions are informed by reliable, real-time data. In her concluding remarks, Garg expressed her strong endorsement of these initiatives, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating the latest technology—both hardware and software—into the state's statistical framework. She underscored that a solid statistical foundation is crucial for evidence-based decision-making, which will ultimately facilitate effective planning, policy development, and governance in Odisha.
